I was witnessing the media making Che Gueveras out of BDR rebels. I don't blame them- information about the atrocities were scarce for them. Moreover, the air time was jam packed with intellectuals presiding their views on the incident and how the BDR was sort of 'forced' into this. However, I, through my colleagues and friends, had insider information from a teacher stuck inside the BDR compound with his family about the genocide taking place and the lethal fear crippling the lives of the civilians.

I was angry with the information I received. I understood the Prime Ministers effort was aimed to reduce casualties to the first wave inflicted on the helpless victims. I respect her promptness in this matter and also salute the brave ministers and politicians who took a leading role in solving the situation. However, even when the general amnesty was given - the BDR rebels took the opportunity to dish out further pain and suffering in the dark of the night to the families as evident by frequent gunshots heard in the area. Once again, I saw the Home Minister along side senior Awami League leadership try out their mettle in negotiationg the release of the hostages leading to 300 civilians, mostly women and children released.

By morning (26 Feb) it was clear to all that BDR rebels were buying time. The question was for what? Were they expecting reinforcements? Trying to hide the evidence of their crimes? Streams of dead bodies found floating near Nababganj and other sewerage outlets gave the answer.

The Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered a speech to the nation. The notable themes were:

Solution through dialogue, not through force.

BDR personnel should follow chain of command.

Refrain from creating confusion through rumours.

Restrain from self-destructive activities, don’t kill your own brothers.

Surrender arms, you will not be harmed.

A committee led by Home Minister has been formed to look into BDR’s professional problems.

I will take any action for the interest of the nation. Don’t force me to take stern action.

I applaud her silent message to the Rebels: Enough! Or I will let the Military have its way.

Within minutes of her speech, the rebels surrendered. But what price did the country had to pay? Current death toll of the Army has reached 108! Mass graves have been un-earthed!! Sweepers cleaning the sewers claims to have seen tunnels filled with bodies of atleast 45 army personnel. They were put to death -unarmed, helpless by the so called deprived rebels. The media was also in a state of static (Shock in my humble opinion). Such atrocities have not been seen after our Liberation War in 1971.

In view of the crimes committed and evidence un-earthed the lips of the BDR rebel supporters were sewed shut. Amazingly, only 300 or so BDR soldiers are now present in the compound -the rest are trying to flee the scene. Already, the RAB and Police have arrested around 200 rebels who were trying to mingle with the crowd. They have also found jeweleries and other valuables they have robbed from the homes of their victims.

The Prime Minister, witnessing the murders/execution evidence - alongside the real life description of Major Kamruzzaman and Major Munir, has vowed to take stern steps against this. She has already proclaimed that the General Amnesty is for the act of rebellion by the BDR soldiers and does not cover the Murder of innocents and pillaging they have done on the civilians. As such they will be accounted for the crimes committed as per the rules and regulations of the organizations they belong to. However, she has also identified that a minor group in the BDR soldiers were inciting the whole revolt and was behind this incident. An investigative committee has been formed to get to the roots behind this. Also, she has taken responsibility in ensuring the safety of the BDR rebels who have decided to follow orders and stay behind.

In view of the whole incident, I have to say that this sorrowful event could not be handled any better. Praises would not be enough to the government which is only 50 days old to handle such a crisis with such restraint to avoid further blood-shed.

What was more inspiring for me was the fact that political leadership of the country (bar few obvious jealous ones) flocked behind the Prime Minister and lend their all out support to the Political Government of the country. Only this has paved the way for solution achieved through voices of reason instead of barking of guns and consequently more howls of sorrow and pain. Now, the country awaits justice for the Martyrs, not revenge.

News Flash : Gun battle in BDR HQ /updates

An hour ago, we the populace in the sprawling metropolitan city of Dhaka, was shell-shocked by the news of gunfire and troop activities in Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) compound in Peelkhana, near Dhanmondi. Our loved ones in the Dhanmondi R/A (near the compound) are still being held affected to this crisis. News about this incident was foggy at best, claims were about BDR fighting terrorists in the streets with the Rapid Action Battalion also involved in the fray. However, as the dust began to settle in the streets, fire and gunshots within the compound brought even more unsettling news. The conflict is not external - but internal!

The military organization of Bangladesh is a proud organization privileged with the charge of defending the country from threats -both foreign and if need be, internal. Their role during the crisis in 2007 has earned praises from all walks of life. However, an armed force thrives on its discipline and chain of command -and need less to say- is not a democracy and should not be a democracy of any form.

The apparent reason behind this conflict that is raging on appears to be the dissatisfaction of the non-commissioned soldiers (nc) in BDR compound and the conflict of interest with the chain of command. The trouble brewed when yesterday, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina toured the BDR compound and was given a list of recommendation on behalf of the BDR. But apparently, the demands of the nc's was not submitted hence the dissatisfaction. I hope this conflict ends as soon as possible, as it is tarnishing the reputation of our military organization as well as of our country. Sure, the reason of dissatisfaction needs to be addressed. But greater the need is to address this sort of violent demonstration to preserve the chain of command and authority in the military. I only hope and pray the casualties are as minimum as possible.

Update 1: From ETV report- "There has been a huge exchange of gunfire at BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) headquarters complex this morning. We have heard mortar fire," local police chief Nabojit Khisa said. "The gunfire is still going on. We are not allowed to enter," he added, declining to comment on reports of a mutiny within the force.

Official sources told AFP that the eruption of the gun battle coincided with a meeting of senior Bangladesh Rifles officers and that the battle appeared to be the result of a problem within the security force and was not a coup d'etat.

However Official sources also said the Bangladesh army has been called out to crush the rebellion as witnesses reported movement of military convoys and hovering of air force helicopters over the sky of the Pilkhana barracks. Smoke could be seen coming from the complex, with security forces sealing the area off.

Update 2: The Prime Minister has assured the dissatisfied BDR personnel that their demands would be given due consideration and outstanding problems will be solved. She has also sternly urged to stop all destructive acts and return to their barracks. A representative team from her office is on their way to negotiate with the rebels to bring this embarrassing crisis to an end.

Personally I believe this to be just effort to gather towards a peaceful resolution of this conflict. In terms of casualties, it has been confirmend that the Director General of BDR has been shot, but is still alive. He alongside 17 BDR personnel and pedestrians were taken the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

Update 3: Now we have started hearing the voices of the rebel BDR soldiers. The complains are about the maltreatment and differential aspects that they have suffered under the command of the Bangladesh Military. Complaints ranging from the DGs utilization of 11 vehicles as guard of honor to misuse/abduction of public money.

Big claims. But even then this does not justify the terrorist activities they have initiated. Though they are asking for complete pardon and removal of BD Army from the leadership of BDR - my stand is - if the Government pardons them, then whar next? Police? Coast Guard? Heck, the soldiers of BD Armed forces? Moreover, they have clearly stated that they can go to any lengths to protect the compound - even use their artiller equipments. In plain english: Use mortars to disperse the BD Army in an civillian residential area!

From all I have heard and seen about this incident, these group of soldiers does not represent the thought of the majority of BDR soldiers deployed along the borders of the nation -doing their duty that they have signed up for. And I hope that the Prime Minister will not take any decision that will inspire such small group of miscreants to do such terrorist acts again and again.

Final Update: The Prime Minister has agreed to grant amnesty to the rebels. She has also assured that phasewise solution to the problems mentioned by them will be taken. In return, she has asked for an armstice and return to the barracks of the rebels. Moreover she has also negotiated a freedom of civilians to leave the compound and the proper treatment of all those who were injured.

Although I understand the decision aimed at stopping more violence, I am discontent. Needless to say that I, in my wizarding ways, consider this to be an Asylum. This, I am afraid, demonstrates that you can get away with anything in this country -and legally! All I feel now is remorse for the lifeless body of the poor, needy, and oppressed rickshawala who was shot dead by some triggerhappy BDR rebel -grinning with amnesty. Death Magnetic isn't a nostalgia trip or a full fledged back to roots thrash metal, but Metallica does embrace some of the elements that made their early albums so good.

Death is not a new theme to metal, nor is the fact of a whole album dedicated to it. But as its Metallica, the songwriting showcased deep thoughts on all sort of farewells -interesting, if not thought provoking, to say the least. The album art is well done.

The songs aren't short, radio-friendly singles. The shortest track on Death Magnetic is five minutes. That gives plenty of room for solos and musical exploration, and Metallica takes full advantage. Kirk Hammett is one of the best guitarists in metal, and his full repertoire of classic riffs and shredding solos is on display. There's a nice amount of diversity as well. Old school, balls-out thrash, mid-tempo groovy jams and slower songs like "Unforgiven III" show a lot of range and versatility. And in the vein of previous songs like "Orion" and "The Call Of Ktulu," Metallica has an instrumental on Death Magnetic, the 10-minute epic "Suicide & Redemption."Epic is the word for this instrumental though -you got to hear to believe its awesomeness. A must have in my daily playlist.

The CD's production has been criticized for being too compressed and loud, reducing the dynamics. Strangely, that clicked for me. It gave the music that garage metal feel, the raw sound that metal bands portray aggressive assertion.

A band that's recorded one of the best CDs in the history of metal has a lot to live up to, and while Death Magnetic doesn't reach the lofty status of Master Of Puppets, it's still their best CD in a long time. Its more of a revival of the basic instincts of the band -the killer attitude, the USP-whatever you call it, Metallica is a legend, and this album proves that they have not lost it yet :D

Election 2008 and the Road Ahead

I have been harping about an election in this small country for quiet some time now. The figure on the right (courtesy newagebd.com) shows the overwhelming majority won by Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman -the Father of the Nation; and the leader of Bangladesh Awami League. But the victory was not her and her parties alone - the member parties of the Alliance of political parties also played an important integral part -as did the young voters of the country.

The trial of the War Criminals for war atrocities in 1971, Controlling price of necessary daily commodities, and concluding the trial and punishment for the murder of the most beloved son of the nation -were the points in election manifesto that swayed countless milions to their cause. Also, the steps towards economic empowerment (creation of jobs etc.) and e-governance (Digitalization of process) were also eye-catching progressive movement. However, personally I am not convinced that we could achieve much in this terms for the last two.

The elections had been held in a fair and festive mood and for the first time after the memorable elections of 1969, almost all of the parties involved have agreed on its fairness. It is a shame that the opposition 4 party alliance claimed fraudulance where surely all steps of this election was transparent to all. Needless to say, the international committee observing the election also appaluded its fairness.

All in all today is a new day. I wish I could say that change has come here at last. However, I am also comprehensive about the path ahead is not going to be an easy one. Even though the majority of seats in the parliament is good news for the alliance I supoprted, this will also be a testing time for the leadership of the said alliance to control its cadre and student groups. If they fail to do so, then greed and hatred will wash this new day and new chance for the country away. I wish all the best for Sheikh Hasina and her alliance. And I hope she would be strong enough to be strict on her own people lest she along with her party restrict themselves to the same fate achieved by the last political party who got majority seats in an election.

ViO Video Mobile Converter

Have a portable device like a Symbian OS Mobile device or Ipod or Zune for that matter? I did not want to give in to the temptation of writing about the well documented event that has taken the internet-and the world- by the storm. But I was provoked by the sense of irony and hint of prevailing justice in the incident itself, and so here I am, evoking my thoughts about Mr. Muntadar al-Zeidi, his two shoes and of course, the agility of Mr. Bush.

Although al-Zeidi's act sees him looking down the barrel for a seven year long imprisonment for 'offending a foreign head of state' as well as being catapulted to one of the most famous man in the internet, I would like to draw attention to the rationale any sane man might have -to do what he has done. It is certain that he is no terrorist and his act of defiance was clearly due to his bereavement -lets face it: Iraq was invaded, thousands of civilians did pay the price in the crucible of war, and worst of all -it is not over yet. The 'peace' that was the sole aim of the invading state never materialized. Mr. Zeidi himself had been previously kidnapped by the militants and God only knows what manner of interrogation he had to face there. All this clearly can lead to any man to his breaking point -especially if the person responsible for so much devastation claims success in front of him!

No, do not misunderstand my sympathy for al-Zeidi as acceptance of his act. Whatever may be the cause, he has broken the behaviour and conduct accepted all over the world. But, I dare say that to stop such happenstance repeating itself, Mr. Bush, his fellow campaigners, planners and plotters -needs to dive deeper and understand what brough this on to this head. A guy throwing his shoes at the president of the United states -is revolting as a clear breach of sensible decorum. But, when the incident becomes an internet craze -with games, webgames, comedy pics and what not, even in the United states itself -then I can't help feeling that these follow up reactions to the incident showcases the frustration of freedom loving, free-speaking people all over the world -and the pair of shoes were just the spark needed to blast it off.

As for the fit Mr. Bush, who managed to dodge the shoes with unbelievable agility (was he expecting this anyway? :p) -I believe that the parting gift he has received from Iraq on his end of term demonstrated what he has achieved.

Victory Day & a plea for Justice

It has been 38 years from the day that will live in Glory, Honour and Reverence in our hearts forever. Glory for our victory weighed in blood more precious than gold. Honour to our independence which is our birthright. Reverence to the martyrs and victors -freedom fighters all -the bravest sons and daughters of the nation. As tens of thousands throngs to the National Mausoleum to pay tribute to the fallen I believe its time to lend our voices to the call within our hearts - bring the country's war criminals of 1971 to justice.

With over three million people killed and over 200,000 women abused by Pakistani forces and their local agents in War of Independence, it is easy to mistake this demand as a revenge seeking aptitude of the people. But it cannot be more further from the truth. This is not about revenge, but of justice. If revenge was what the people were after, then not a single one of the over 90,000 pakistani prisoners of war would have been spared. This is of justice for the crimes committed against humanity -the largest genocide ever. The atrocities inflicted by the beasts defy all form of base human quality. If the war-criminals of 1945 can be prosecuted still today, there's no rationale for a country born from such wounds not to prosecute the guilty.

The Bangladesh Sector Commander Forum - a group of war veterans lobbying the government to prosecute those who committed crimes against humanity during the war - claims 14 candidates are among over 11,000 war criminals identified by a fact-finding committee. The 14 are mostly running for Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam, a party that uses religious minded people's sentiments and opposed independence and is now a major partner in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led electoral alliance. And, the election is only two weeks ahead.

Needless to say, with all the shits about 'blasphemy' law and others, its easy to make your pick for the party you should vote for. Although I belive in personal freedom of choice and would love to remain impartial in this blog, especially in an election of such magnitude and importance -I can't help but comment: your vote shows which side you were on, what you believe is to be right, what you hold sacred in your heart -it might be all communist, nationalist or whatever -but let it not be cast for mass-murderers, hypocrites who does not deserve to be even buried in this sacred soil -let alone fly its national flag.

Full Moon Rising

It seems that destiny has taken literally my last post about the Smiling Heavens where I urged people to take notice of little miracles happening at the celestial level -for fate has tempted us once again, on December 13th. Metal-fans or not,I am referring to a musical journey into your own souls depth when you take the time and listen to what Opeth has to offer in this marvellous masterpiece - Blackwater Park.

The Swedish band Opeth are the leading pioneers in Progressive metal, and I would go so far as to say that their music is really inspiring new blood to the metal scene. Newcomers to Opeth's musical genius might be deterred by Mikael Åkerfeldt's growling voice at first - but if you really get past this block then there is nothing quiet like the experience you will attain from Opeth. And Blackwater Park -to me atleast- is the best they have to offer (I have not gone thorugh Watershed, as of yet).

Blackwater Park displays a huge mastery of musicianship -Opeth managed to enchant their instruments and give birth to flowing, depressive, reverent music. To those people who says that metal musci can’t be beautiful -be honest, it can and this album proves it. The music in here does so much for the listener, you can either get caught up in the brutality of such songs as Blackwater Park and The Funeral Portrait, relax to the ambient masterpieces such as Harvest and Bleak, or gaze into the sorrow that exists in your heart through the depressive masterpieces such as Dirge for November. For sure nobody can listen to this album and not feel some sort of mood instilled in their mind. This album is timeless -you can enjoy this at any time of day. Myself? It has preety much become my night time lullaby.

Opeth have clearly mastered every aspect of music writing and performing that they are able to conceive beautiful soundscapes in which every instrument works together in perfect harmony. Many of the chords are very exotic and not commonly used. Though the solos are short and there are not a lot of them, every time there is a solo it is placed just in the right spot and sparks just the right mood. The transitions of songs in the album are perfect and moves from one idea to the next without making it sound random or sudden.

The bass is very audible and actually displays some great feel. Martin knows his place in the band and keeps the groove and feel going. The drums do not receive a perfect score because even though Lopez is a master who can play 5 things at once on the drums, I still wait for him to take over and show his skill, but it never really happens. However the timing and fills are excellent. The piano playing is beautiful, especially at the end of The Leper Affinity. However it is quite slow in Patterns in the ivy. However it still captures the listener’s attention and reflects a mournfulyet beautifuly alluring sound.

The vocals on this album are incredible. Mikael has mastered growling and has a beautiful voice. Just listen to the clean vocals in Leper Affinity when he sings “You sighted and let me in.” Every time he hits the note on Sighted, a chill runs through my spine. He continues to put so much emotion into his singing, and it really is something you must hear. The harsh vocals are loud and brutal. They rest softly on top of the music yet every word is pushed out hard and it is rather brutal actually. Testament to their Metal :D

The three best tracks are Blackwater Park, Harvest and Dirge for November. Dirge for November starts off a bit awkward but very emotional. Then a relaxing guitar duet finds its way in there. Soon the distorted guitars are playing some cool moody chords and then the good part hits. The vocals come in with a very minor dark mood to them. You can almost picture Satan having his way during the vocal lines. There is a very red, bloody evil mood the main section of this song, but soon the clean guitar comes and slowly fades out with one of the most beautiful, depressive soundscapes I have ever heard. Blackwater Park closes the album with a bang. The opening is just evil and bouncy. The vocals are there for a little bit but an acoustic soundscape intervenes. It is very relaxing and you would never expect what will happen next to happen. Soon the whole band comes back in and the next 4 or 5 minutes of the song, which leads to the end, are the most evil, brutal, and well written moments in metal history. The song keeps getting louder and faster and the vocals drive a powerful message and then the song has built to the peak and soon a quiet acoustic line has come out of nowhere and it quickly fades out, leaving the listener speechless. Harvest is wonderfuly contrast to the voice of the previous songs, a soothness and melancholic sorrow that grows a little harsh -but then its the way the music plays with your mind.

People who loves metal should definitely get a piece of this. People who dislike metal or this album in particular should give it another chance and sit down with nothing else going on and truly absorb the amazing music it has to offer. I can guarantee you will have trouble finding another album with the same impact as this one. I suggest if you buy this album to sit down and relax with nothing else going on and listening to it start to finish, and you will be shocked. The composition, the mastery, the lyrics will win you over. Just listen to words-

...Into the orchard I walk peering way past the gate
Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait
Drained by the coldest caress, stalking shadows ahead
Halo of death, all I see is departure
Mourner's lament but it's me who's the martyr...

Eid wishes and few words..

The auspicious day today, in Dark Cloud City and also many other places in the world, is Eid-ul-Azah. And I would like to wish everybody a very wonderful day full of fun and festivities. Just be cautious about your health and try to have control on what you eat today. Don't overstock yourself -which may lead to health hazards, which can ruin the whole festive feeling. That and other well wishes being said, I would like to take this moment to reflect on some important issues we tend to overlook during this time.

First and foremost cleanliness is a virtue. It was well practiced by our Prophet (S.M) but alas! not by his followers. Do ensure that you clean up well after Qurbani and follow the necessary civil laws around it. Quiet often there is gore and other extracts literally littered all over the roads and shows how civilized we really are. Come on people, we can do better than that if we just take sometime and water!

Secondly, the main theme of Eid ul Azah is not to portray who gave the biggest cow/camel/goat or ate the most meat :p Take some time and go through the scriptures -the lesson is to surrender (and the word is: surrender) your most valued possession, be it material or immaterial to God. That should be our thought and is metaphorically reflected in our Qurbani. Do not mistake this act of sacrifice as appeasement of God, for clearly it has been mentioned that He does not require or receive anything from the qurbani we make. It is the thought and the feeling of submission behind that counts.

Lastly, with the election coming up, it hurts me to see more extremists/fundamentalists (frauds: in both cases) are taking their chances and torturing the minority people of our country. A glance at the paper everyday seems to convey these horror stories and these have all started again with the proximity of the elections. Those who wreak havoc with the name of Islam on their lips are the greatest enemy of Islam. I harbor no hope that these perpetrators will suddenly see the light on this holy day and correct their path. But I do believe that if the followers of the true path stand their ground against these ignorant brutes then we can make a change. We must realize that it is our God given duty to stand up against all fallacies and tyranny -be it on Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or Christians or any Indigenous people of our country. Only then will our Qurbani be truly meaningful and worthwhile.

The Smiling Heavens

The world is full of magic and miracles. And if the wisdom of our ancestors ever taught us anything -it is to take time and listen, lest we fail to capture those magical moments and remember them all our lives. Such a moment did transpire, on the 1st of December, 2008, when -if you are one of the lucky ones- you could have seen a smiling heaven looking down upon us.

Thanks to a tip-off from Agrodut, I was able to witness this act (barely). However, due to the unavailability of my scrying glass (modern users read: camera) I am relying on Kiron's own photography of the celestial event. Annoyed having to type those same phrases and organization names and acronyms -and extend them again and again? With rapidly encroaching deadlines for document submissions anyone can use an extra help in those repetitive type tasks. And that is where Phrase Express comes in - a very nifty and handy solution for those bothering tasks -and of course, its free for non-commercial use!

For those who have never test driven a Text Replacement Application, the basic principle is that you type in a text snippet -short texts- which the application recognizes and extends and or formats. For example if you type 'btw' the application will recognize this as the cue and expand it in your word processor as 'by the way'. Pretty neat huh?

However, Phrase Express goes beyond this simple tasks -way beyond (which is a good thing). It works with any text editor -word, outlook, power-point etc. If you take a peek at some of the features you would also understand how helpful it is (copied/summarized straight from their web page):

Eliminate repetitive typing:
-PhraseExpress saves you countless keystrokes and expands custom abbreviations into frequently used text snippets.
Predictive text auto-completion:
-The unique text prediction feature automatically recognizes repetitive phrases and autocomplete them on demand.
-Existing documents and Outlook Emails can be scanned to personalize PhraseExpress to your writing style.
System-wide spelling correction:
-PhraseExpress automatically correct common misspellings while you type.
Multi Clipboard:
-While the standard Windows clipboard inserts only the last copied text segment, the Clipboard Manager now stores all recently copied clipboard contents for instant pasting into any application.
RSI syndrome prevention:

-PhraseExpress reduces the risk of suffering the repetitive strain injury as it helps to significantly reduce use of the keyboard.

Check Phrase Express for further information and download options.

Gmail's new look

I love customization -more so the ability and option to customize. I have a colleague who has even resorted to taking biscuits/skipping lunch altogether. In the end whether this will be a successful attempt remains doubtful. I personally see it more as a psychological issue then of a physical one. If you believe you are fat, and be mentally stuck with the notion -then you will never come to be in good shape. Thus the first rule is to think fit and try to behave accordingly. This, if you follow my logic, will mean more movement -expenses of that heavy calorie intake diet you just took there. which leads me to the second rule: change your food habit, gradually. Do not go into a overnight reduction of all yummy foods into nothingness -our bodies are not built like that. Human body is adaptable -let it adapt to the food habit change gradually. Start taking chapatis (rotis) at dinner instead of rice (thanks Lily for the great advice), it works. Take more fruits and vegetables. See, this will change in taste buds means that there will be a significant drop in our calorie intake as our bodies are not used to take these different diets. Once you have these two rules in motion, go for little freehand exercises. Start taking those morning jogs that you could never get up to. you will feel better. And in the end of the month, take a look at the scales -you will be happy with the result in the scales and in the mirror as well (provided your integrity in following the rules is out of question :p)

Red Alert! Red Alert !! Red Alert !!!

Good evening Comrade. Welcome to the latest edition of the mayhem that's inherent in the Red Alert universe -Red Alert 3. I must admit, I took a half day leave to grab a copy as soon as it hit the streets of our Dark Cloud Asylum and have been buried deep in a blissful heaven of over-the-top blow-em-all-up gameplay that is trademark of this stalwart series for the last week. Has it matched my expectation? Sure. And in many cases over passed it. Starcraft II, you have a hard competition to topple Red Alert 3.

In Red Alert 3 you can take on the role of a commander of Communist Soviet, Democratic Allies or the Imperialistic Japan and duke it out with the other factions. The units are well diversified and though all units have a secondary ability, none looks like a clone of the other -which is a wonderful thing in terms of strategic and tactical options it provides.

The campaigns were exquisitely scripted and had enough diversity to keep me hooked. Although, a little too easy for my taste :p On the other hand, the cinematics were very nicely done (too nicely if you get my drift ;) The skirmishes were all just a teaser for the fanatic fun you can have in multi-player.

Only one con I can focus on right now -I do terribly miss the nation-wise unique units of RA 2 i.e British Sniper; Iraqi Desolator :). I hope they bring them back in expansions ;)

In short EA has done a great work on the sequel to one of the best strategy games out there. I think this much is good enough as a nutshell review of RA 3. I must dive back to the game. Good Hunting Tovarashk Commander.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dailywizard.blogspot.com/2008/11/red-alert-red-alert-red-alert.html' title='Red Alert! However, there is another election that is of immense importance! (Provided that it occurs!!). The Parliamentary Election coming up in Bangladesh is on December 18, 2008. The significance of this election is not lost to the people of our 'deceived' nation.

Deceived??? But is it not the perfect word to describe it? Is it not the deception, misinformation & corruption that has rotten the core of our nation's existence after the glorious struggle in our Independence War? The plague that would have wiped the nation in 1971 is still at large and is again aiming for the throat of our motherland.

Even amidst all the hunger & starvation, flood & famine, misuse & abuse the hard working people kept their faith in the theological concept of Democracy. It was evident in 1990 and in 2007 -where the general populace shifted to be an angry mob -to forcefully make 'right' that what was done 'wrong' by greed and pure malice. In those 'revolutions' it was not an cadre of a political party that took the streets -it was the people- and the force gathered would not be swayed by threats of bullets or prosecution.

Then came 11 January 2007. The 'mob of billions' were given hope. A care-taker government took up the stage to deliver Justice, Transparency and Reforms to the deceived people. The ever trusting, ever caring and ever watchful people welcomed them with open arms. The military might backed up the government and for some months, jubilations could be heard all over the county.

I will not go in to the discussion of the right and wrongs of decisions taken by the care taker government in the interim period (which is way beyond necessary in my humble opinion). I comprehend that there are multiple fronts of struggle and one simply cannot make all fronts happy. However, the release of the major corrupt political individuals and the recent submissive nature of the 'once so righteous and high' care taker government has raised more than one set of eyebrows and was (still is) being questioned. Specially the near abandonment of the reforms in the political arena (i.e by issuing the religion-specific-political-party to get EC permission) disillusioned the people of returning to the golden days where ideals and idealistic people took up mantles as leaders of the nation.

But ultimately, all decisions taken and executed by the government comes down to this penultimate moment -the role they play in ensuring a fair election. I hope the government will prove their critics wrong and give us an election worthy of praise. Otherwise, my caveat: The people are not fools. They are simply watching in silence. For now.

U.S. Elections: The Obama Spell

I know the preliminary rounds shows Barack Hussein Obama and the Democrats are going to win the U.S. elections coming up in a days time. I am sure he is fully aware of the importance of him being elected -as this might just be the key moment to usher the whole world in a new era; such, is the importance and significance of the U.S elections to the whole world. But then again, If I was aware that it would have been this enjoyable, I would have taken the plunge earlier.

For the uninitiated, the Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels by Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman made into a vampire in the 18th century. The Books in the series published so far are:

    * Interview with the Vampire (1976)
* The Vampire Lestat (1985)
* The Queen of the Damned (1988)
* The Tale of the Body Thief (1992)
* Memnoch the Devil (1995)
* The Vampire Armand (1998)
* Merrick (2000)
* Blood and Gold (2001)
* Blackwood Farm (2002)
* Blood Canticle (2003)

Although I have gone over them, and with it the ups and downs of Lestats life and how wickedly he ploys, plays and is being played by the lives of all around him, I cannot but feel a little bit let down with how the series continued after Memnoch the Devil. I guess Memnoch felt so truer than life to me, that my expectation from Anne Rice was gorgantuous to fulfill anyway :p Therefore those spectacled readers out there, do take these books for a read, especially the first five one, cos if you are not, then you are missing some literary masterpieces. Or, if you have gone through them, feel free to tell me how did you feel about them.

Shuvo Deepaboli - Happy Deewali

Today is the Deepaboli -not only does this signifies the Kali Puja, but also the coming of the new year. I was an average school boy with my music experience as deep as John Denver's country songs -that too limited to one cassette which I could only gulp down to track four 'High Calypso'. Thats when I saved enough money to buy my second cassette, boy was I excited! After half an hour of searching I came up with this album of a half-naked, unbalanced blind lady, failing measurably to hold the scale of justice in her hand (She should have used both hands imho). I took the album, plugged it in the cassette player -and my life changed.

No, this is not about '..And justice for all'. Yes, this is about that band. This is about the album that to my mind, showcases the strength of the legendary epic band Metallica -The Black Album. I do vouch that all of its songs are epic in their proportions. The composition, the lyrics, the growling, the tone -and yes, I am getting ecstatic to write about them.

Sure, this is not speed metal at its finest. Ofcourse Metallica have made better Heavy Metal albums. But this is not about being heavy metal individual songwise. This was being an all encompassing album turning Heavy Metal into an art form. This may not be raw Heavy Metal, but this was vintage Metallica -a treat to its fans for its epic talent and diversity -yet comprised in a solid, all star album. By far one of the best of the legendary bands performance -if simply not the best. And frankly -nothing else matters!

Lost Again

Lost again, and lost in time-
The winds of change carves the features
On my face.
On the move again, and moving on-
The frozen rivers are burning blisters
On my feet.
And I stare up, and across the ocean-
God? I noticed the driver was an old 50ish Bihari man, whose home i assumed was somewhere in the Geneva Colony we have at Mohammadpur. What was surprising was that he had an extremely smelly 10-11 year old kid beside him in the drivers seat. The kid, I understood to be his son, was very happy to have the opportunity to tour Dhaka beside his father.

As lady luck would have it, I went to IBA at least a dozen times or more with this unique combination of Father and smelly Son driver duo -and the smell always bothered me, but overrode due to my need to get timely to the school.
That was five years ago and after my school term finished that year, I did not see this duo till last week. Behold, the smelly Kid has grown up, and where five years ago, the father was showing an awe struck kid the jam filled streets of Dhaka -the Kid is now reminding the near deaf with age father, the directions he should go.

I could not but feel humbled by the inter dependencies the relationship that family brings to people -the love, the responsibilities, the dependencies.
